Manually Open a Locked Washing Machine Door

If your washing machine door is locked and will not open, there are limited safe situations where you can manually release it.

This only applies when:

• The wash cycle has stopped

• The drum is not spinning

• There is no visible water inside

If the machine is mid-cycle or full of water, do not attempt to force it open.

Why the Door Stays Locked

Front-loading machines lock the door for safety during operation.

The door may remain locked if:

• The cycle has not fully ended

• The machine has not drained completely

• The lock mechanism has failed

• Power was interrupted during operation

Before attempting a manual release, always disconnect power at the outlet.

Step 1: Turn Off and Unplug the Machine

Unplug the washing machine and wait 5–10 minutes.

Some locks reset once power is removed.

If the door unlocks after restoring power, no further action may be needed.

Step 2: Check for Emergency Release (If Equipped)

Some machines include a small manual release tab near the drain filter area.

This is usually located:

• Behind the lower front access panel

• Near the drain pump filter

If present, gently pull the tab downward to release the lock.

Not all models include this feature.

Step 3: Drain Remaining Water First

If the door remains locked and water is visible inside:

• Use the drain filter access

• Slowly drain the water into a shallow container

Most machines will not unlock if water remains inside the drum.

When Manual Opening Is Not Safe

Do not:

• Force the door open

• Pull aggressively on the handle

• Pry the latch area

Forcing the door can damage:

• The latch

• The hinge

• The lock housing

If the lock will not release after draining and a power reset, the door lock mechanism may be faulty.

If the Problem Keeps Happening

If the door frequently stays locked or requires manual release, the issue may involve:

• A failing door lock assembly

• A faulty internal switch

In that case, testing the lock is the next step.
